Cobalamin · On the Gelagen panel
Vitamin B12 In Gelagen
Built around a cobalt atom, made in nature only by bacteria, and required by every skin cell that intends to divide.
The Amount
6 mcg per serving
Two and a half times the adult reference intake.

What that number is measured against
Six micrograms is two and a half times an adult day, which sounds generous and is standard practice for a good reason: absorption of B12 is deliberately inefficient. The receptor-based route in your small intestine saturates at roughly one or two micrograms per meal, and everything beyond that crosses only by slow passive diffusion at about one percent. So a label figure well above requirement is arithmetic rather than excess, and no tolerable upper limit exists.
What Vitamin B12 does inside a skin cell
B12 has precisely two jobs inside a human cell and one of them explains its place here. It hands a methyl group to an enzyme called methionine synthase, and that handover regenerates the folate needed to build DNA. No working B12 means no working folate. No working folate means no DNA copy. No DNA copy means no new skin cell. The basal layer of your epidermis divides harder than almost any tissue you own, so it registers a shortfall before slower tissues notice anything.
What running short looks like
A B12 shortfall builds across years, because the liver holds a genuine reserve, and then arrives in two systems at once. In the bloodstream it produces oversized, badly formed red cells and the exhaustion that accompanies them. In the nerves it appears as loss of sensation, pins and needles, and trouble with balance. On skin the classic signs are a sore smooth tongue, cracks at the corners of the mouth and, in darker skin, patches of increased pigment on the hands. The nerve damage can become permanent if it runs long enough, which makes this the entry on the panel that belongs with a doctor rather than a shop.
Where the ceiling is
None has been established, and given how self-limiting absorption is, that is unsurprising. Very high oral doses are the standard treatment for deficiency precisely because only a small percentage crosses passively. Which is a rare case in nutrition where a label figure far above requirement is defensible on mechanism rather than on marketing.
What to be careful about
Two indirect ones. B12 can normalise the blood picture of a folate deficiency while nerve damage continues underneath, which is why the two are assessed together rather than one at a time. And long-term metformin and long-term acid-suppressing medication both reduce absorption meaningfully, so anybody on either should be having their level checked rather than assuming a gummy has handled it.
Where food supplies it
Meat, fish, shellfish, eggs and dairy, plus fortified cereals and fortified plant milks. What is absent from that list is the whole story, because a plant food that has not been fortified contributes essentially nothing. Anyone eating no animal products, and long-standing vegetarians, need a dependable source and are the likeliest of anybody to be running low. So is anybody past about sixty, because stomach acid production falls with age and B12 has to be prised off food protein by acid before it can be absorbed at all.
If you remember one thing
If you eat no animal foods, this is the entry on the panel most likely to matter to you personally — and important enough to confirm with a blood test rather than a label.
The bottle wins. The serving is two gummies, and every nutrient with an established reference intake is declared on the supplement facts panel with a percent daily value beside it. Should any number on this page contradict the panel on your own bottle, the bottle is right and this page has fallen behind a reformulation. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prescription, or a substitute for asking a clinician.
Vitamin B12: Common Questions
About this nutrient specifically rather than the product.
Why is the amount 250% of requirement?
Because absorption is self-limiting. The receptor route saturates at a couple of micrograms per meal, so a higher label figure is how a useful amount actually gets in.
I eat meat regularly. Is extra B12 pointless for me?
Usually not. The people most likely to be short are vegans, long-term vegetarians, adults over sixty, and anyone on long-term metformin or acid suppressants.
Can you take too much B12?
No upper limit is established and absorption is self-limiting, so most of a large oral dose is simply never taken up.
Will B12 give me energy?
Only if you were deficient, in which case correcting it lifts the fatigue that came with it. It is not a stimulant, whatever the marketing implies.
