Vitamin A In Gelagen
The most studied nutrient in skin science, and the only one here where more is clearly not better.
The Amount
630 mcg per serving
The one amount on this panel with a ceiling worth checking.

What that number is measured against
Six hundred and thirty micrograms is roughly three quarters to nine tenths of an adult day, which is a substantial share from a single product. The ceiling is three thousand, so this serving on its own sits comfortably inside it — about a fifth of the way. The arithmetic that catches people out is stacking: a full-strength multivitamin can carry another 900, a cod liver oil capsule several hundred more, and a portion of liver several thousand. Only the combined daily total counts, and this is the one entry on the panel where that sentence has teeth.
What Vitamin A does inside a skin cell
This is the most thoroughly studied nutrient in all of skin science and it is not close. Retinoic acid, the active end product, behaves less like a nutrient than like a hormone: it binds receptors sitting directly on DNA and switches whole gene programmes on and off. In skin those programmes govern how a keratinocyte matures as it travels from the basal layer to the surface, how much keratin it produces, how the follicle behaves and how the dermis handles collagen turnover. Every prescription retinoid in dermatology works through that same receptor system.
What running short looks like
The oldest recorded sign is night blindness, because retinal forms part of the pigment the eye uses in dim light; untreated it remains a leading cause of preventable childhood blindness worldwide. On skin, deficiency produces phrynoderma — dry hardened plugs around the hair follicles, typically on the upper arms and thighs — with general dryness and raised susceptibility to infection.
Where the ceiling is
Three thousand micrograms a day of preformed vitamin A for adults, and unlike most of this panel that ceiling is serious. Vitamin A is fat soluble and stored in the liver, so intake accumulates across months rather than clearing daily. Chronic excess causes dry cracking skin, hair loss, bone and joint pain, headache and liver damage — several of which are the very things people take it hoping to fix. The limit applies to preformed vitamin A; beta-carotene from food is governed separately because the body regulates its conversion.
What to be careful about
High intakes of preformed vitamin A during pregnancy are associated with birth defects, and that association is well established rather than precautionary. Anybody pregnant, possibly pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive should not take a vitamin A supplement without explicit medical direction. Two further cautions: a prescription retinoid such as isotretinoin is itself a vitamin A derivative, so an oral supplement stacks on top of a drug already doing that work; and liver disease or heavy alcohol intake matter, because the liver is where vitamin A is stored and handled.
Where food supplies it
Preformed vitamin A: liver, which is extraordinarily concentrated, then eggs, butter, cheese, oily fish and fortified milk. On the plant side: sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin and butternut squash, then spinach and kale, red peppers, mango and apricot. Two practical notes. Carotenoids are fat soluble, so a little oil on the vegetables measurably improves absorption. Liver is concentrated enough that several countries advise pregnant women to leave it alone entirely, and a food capable of approaching a ceiling by itself tells you the ceiling is not a formality.
If you remember one thing
Add 630 mcg to everything else you take before you take it, and if pregnancy is a possibility, talk to a doctor first. This is the most important paragraph on this entire website.
The bottle wins. The serving is two gummies, and every nutrient with an established reference intake is declared on the supplement facts panel with a percent daily value beside it. Should any number on this page contradict the panel on your own bottle, the bottle is right and this page has fallen behind a reformulation. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prescription, or a substitute for asking a clinician.
Vitamin A: Common Questions
About this nutrient specifically rather than the product.
Is 630 mcg of vitamin A a lot?
It is about three quarters of an adult day and a fifth of the tolerable upper limit. On its own it is fine; combined with a multivitamin it becomes worth totalling.
Can I take it while pregnant?
Not without your doctor's explicit approval. Large amounts of preformed vitamin A taken while pregnant are linked to birth defects.
Can I take it with isotretinoin?
Ask your prescriber first. Medicines of that family are chemically built from vitamin A, so swallowing more piles onto what is already in your bloodstream.
Is this the same as a retinol cream?
Same receptor system, entirely different delivery. One is swallowed and distributed by your body; the other is applied to a chosen patch of skin at a chosen strength.
