Vitamin B7 · On the Gelagen panel
Biotin In Gelagen
The headline nutrient of the whole hair-skin-nails category, present here at a dose hundreds of times the daily requirement.
The Amount
5000 mcg per serving
By far the largest single amount on this panel.

What that number is measured against
Thirty micrograms a day covers an adult, and an ordinary mixed diet clears that without anybody trying. Five thousand is roughly a hundred and sixty-seven times it. That sounds alarming and is not, because no tolerable upper limit has ever been set for biotin: the surplus leaves in urine rather than piling up anywhere that matters. What the number does buy you is the single practical problem on this page, and it is a problem of measurement rather than of health.
What Biotin does inside a skin cell
Five enzymes called carboxylases are inert until a biotin molecule is physically bolted onto them, and those five sit at the junctions where your body handles fats and amino acids. A hair shaft and a nail plate are both built from keratin, keratin is assembled from amino acids, and that chain is how a B vitamin ends up upstream of a fingernail. Biotin is not the material. It is the tool without which the material never gets fitted.
What running short looks like
Genuine deficiency is uncommon and unmistakable when it appears: hair thinning diffusely, a scaly red rash around the nose, mouth and eyes, nails splitting in layers, and in longer cases pins and needles in the hands and feet. Correct the shortfall and those signs go into reverse. The narrow group who actually run short includes long-term anticonvulsant users, people with a rare inherited enzyme fault, heavy drinkers, some pregnancies, and anybody eating raw egg white in quantity.
Where the ceiling is
There is none, and that is unusual enough to be worth stating twice. What there is instead is interference. A very large number of laboratory immunoassays are built around the extraordinarily tight bond between biotin and a bacterial protein called streptavidin, and circulating biotin competes for those binding sites. Sandwich-format assays tend to read falsely low; competitive-format assays tend to read falsely high. You cannot tell from outside which your hospital runs.
What to be careful about
Thyroid function and cardiac troponin are the two tests where a wrong number has real consequences. Regulators have published safety communications on this after a case in which a falsely low troponin contributed to a death, and doses in the thousands of micrograms are exactly the ones most often implicated. Biotin will not hurt you. Tell whoever draws your blood that you take it, and the entire problem disappears.
Where food supplies it
Cooked eggs first, then liver, salmon, almonds, sunflower seeds and sweet potato, plus a small contribution from bacteria living in your own gut. There is a lovely piece of biochemistry hiding in that first item: raw egg white contains avidin, a protein that grips biotin so hard it can cause a genuine deficiency in somebody eating raw eggs regularly. Heat destroys avidin, so the omelette is on your side and the raw one is not.
If you remember one thing
Say it before the needle goes in. That single sentence is worth more than everything else on this page, because it is the only part with a documented case of harm attached to it.
The bottle wins. The serving is two gummies, and every nutrient with an established reference intake is declared on the supplement facts panel with a percent daily value beside it. Should any number on this page contradict the panel on your own bottle, the bottle is right and this page has fallen behind a reformulation. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a prescription, or a substitute for asking a clinician.
Biotin: Common Questions
About this nutrient specifically rather than the product.
Is 5000 mcg of biotin dangerous?
No toxic threshold has ever been established for biotin. It is wasteful rather than harmful, and the real consequence is interference with laboratory tests.
Does biotin grow hair?
In genuine deficiency, visibly and quickly. Outside deficiency the evidence is far weaker than the advertising suggests, and this site would rather say that than sell a better story.
Should I stop before a blood test?
Ask the laboratory, because their cut-off varies with the assay. Them knowing at all matters far more than any particular pause.
Why is the dose so high then?
Because high biotin numbers sell in this category. That is the honest answer, and it is not a reason on its own to avoid the product.
